No individual can personally dismiss a criminal charge. After an arrest, the prosecutor decides whether the case will continue. An alleged victim’s wishes may be considered, but a request not to prosecute does not automatically end the case.
A family violence allegation generally involves someone related by family, marriage, a dating relationship, or membership in the same household. A family violence finding can have consequences beyond the immediate case, including effects on firearm rights and future criminal charges.
